Howdy, ... and welcome to the new, updated website dedicated to the Dekle and Dekle Descendants of the U.S.A. books, first published by Ansel Dekle, III in 1975, then updated and published by Anne Coleman Dekle in 1998. I became interested in Ansel's book in the '80s. I was fascinated by some of the pictures in the first edition, and was very impressed with the revision and extra pictures by Anne. At some point, I started to copy the names from these books into a database program. I now use Personal Ancestral File, mainly because it's free and it does everything I need it to do... including generating the searchable web pages of names you might be looking for. Not long after I started copying these names, I became interested in web design. Now is a good time to freely admit I am not a genealogist, nor am I a Webmaster. I just happened to need a project for learning how to build webpages, and my Dekle books immediately popped into my mind. I say this to notify viewers that most of the information on this site that is NOT in the books has been offered by other family members that have found my site. I can't guarantee the accuracy of most of it. And being mostly human, I may have made a few errors while copying data from the books. Feel free to email me with any errors you may find. I'm not much on data entry, so after a few years I made contact with the family of Anne Dekle and asked if they had her data files that I could import into my program. What was offered was Anne's original Page Maker files containing the layout of her book. I converted that book into a PDF file. A while later, I broke the big PDF file into smaller files, after the sections of the book. Since then, I have converted the PDF files into .jpg images… pictures of a sort… and created a website that can be navigated similar to flipping the pages of her book. At the top, left side of this web page is a drop down list of chapters for the virtual book pages, The Dekle Book. Here, you can click on the section of the book, then browse through those pages. Two links that are most useful are the INDEX and DESCENDANTS links. If you are looking for a person in the book, first go to the index pages of the book. Every page should be listed with the surnames that can be found on that page. Once the name is found, there should be a page number listed that will contain information about that person. Click on the DECENDANTS link, find the page number and search for that person on that page. As an example, to look up Ranes Carter (me), I would first click on the Index link. I see the surnames Caroll thru Connell. I click on that link to open that page. I find my name at the top of the second column. Next to my name is the page number 198. Now, I click on the Descendants link. That opens a page full of links to the main body of the book. I scroll down to find the link for page 198 and click on it to open that page. Towards the middle of that page, I see my name, Ranes Carter. It might take some getting used to, but it's not that hard once you've done it a time or two. I tried to make is as much like thumbing through the book as I could. The drop down menu on the top right contains links to My Database Of Names. Here you can find most of the names I have in my database. I have many names that aren't in the book, and I have very many names in the book that I still needed to enter into my database. If you don't find the names you are looking for here, check the book pages for those names. Then, email me will any updates you may have!! One day, I might just have to publish the third edition of the Dekle books. With that said, I welcome all updates from all families linked to the descendants of John Leonard Dekle, the immigrant.
